Manuel Baptista
Sombras e Outras Cores/Shadows and Other Colors
Sombras e Outras Cores/Shadows and Other Colors features several works created by Manuel Baptista between 1963 and 2002, which curator João Pinharanda now brings to the public. Neither a retrospective nor an anthology, the exhibition brings together key moments of the artist’s oeuvre, through which it is possible to explore four decades of an intense, diverse, and coherent work. Manuel Baptista’s works feature a constant tension between construction and chance, between rule and indiscipline, and are based on the artist’s unified understanding of the pair consisting of the geometric vocation of forms and volumes and nature’s free expression. It is therefore possible to find in his work lines that could be seen as naturalistic and others as geometric, approaches that could be labeled as organic as others as abstract or non-figurative.
