Journey to the West

The exhibition Journey to the West by Benoit + Bo, draws inspiration from the 16th-century Chinese novel by Wu Cheng’en. The novel follows the fantastical journey of a Buddhist monk and his escort across Central Asia, featuring iconic characters like the Monkey King and the anthropomorphic pig Zhu Bajie, as well as symbols like the peach of Longevity, stolen by the Monkey King.

This exhibition presents the outcome of Benoit+Bo’s artistic exploration, as they reflect on their extensive physical and internal journey across Asia and Europe and build a bridge between the two. Some of the characters of the novel even inhabit the artworks on display.

Exploring elements such as scale, material, format or context, Benoit+Bo defy categorization and reimagine the aesthetics of popular Asian art, to address global issues and concerns.Between photography, painting, sculpture and installation, the exhibition features several series that materialize this unique perspective.
