Doclisboa’24
International Film Festival
The 22nd edition of Doclisboa shows 183 films from 55 countries, including 28 world premieres, which together compose a portrait of contemporaneity and humanity, and of what surrounds, impassions and torments them both.
One of the highlights is a retrospective of Mexican filmmaker Paul Leduc, at Cinemateca. Entitled A Dance to the Music of Time, it presents Leduc’s avant-garde and independent cinema, which portrays the major political and sociocultural changes in his country of origin, from the second half of the 20th century to the beginning of the 21st century.
Also noteworthy are the opening and closing films: Sempre, by Luciana Fina, a work that recently premiered at the Venice Film Festival, and O Dia Que Te Conheci, by Brazilian filmmaker André Novais Oliveira.
In the From the Earth to the Moon section, which presents the most recent films by fundamental directors of contemporary cinema, it is worth highlighting Soldier Monika, by Paul Poet, centered on Monika Donner, former elite soldier, transgender, former lawyer at the Austrian Ministry of Defense and author favoured by the extreme right, Alexander Horwarth’s Henry Fonda for President and Oliver Stone’s Lula.
