The Palace of the City of Keil do Amaral

The exhibition marks the 50th anniversary of the death of architect Francisco Keil do Amaral, municipal architect for a decade (1938-1947). The work of Keil do Amaral is deeply connected to Lisbon and the installation of the City Museum (today the Museum of Lisbon) in the Pimenta Palace.
For 27 years, he devised four proposals for the construction of a Palace of the City to crown the top of Parque Eduardo VII. This exhibition shows lesser-known aspects of these projects which, although they never came to fruition, reveal his evolution as an architect and the urbanistic thinking he developed about Alto do Parque Eduardo VII.
The author developed several projects that changed the face of the city and gave it modernity and monumentality that are still present today, such as the first version of the airport. This exhibition, featuring objects from the Lisbon Museum, the Lisbon Municipal Archive and the Gabinete de Estudos Olisiponenses, also highlights the constant relationship that existed between different architects and the never-realised projects for the extension of Avenida da Liberdade and the Palace of Justice.
In addition to the unrealised plan to extend the Pimenta Palace, the exhibition will also provide an insight into Keil do Amaral’s profound intervention for a Lisbon that is, after all, constantly changing.
