Art on Display

To celebrate the Gulbenkian Museum’s 50th anniversary, this exhibition draws on the exhibitive strategies used during the opening of the museum back in 1969.

It also recreates different exhibitive solutions devised by Franco Albini and Franca Helg, Carlo Scarpa, Lina Bo Bardi, Aldo van Eyck, and Alison and Peter Smithson.

Italian designer Franco Albini advised the Gulbenkian Foundation on the most current best practices in museum design . Inaugurated in 1969, the Museum clearly reflected Albini’s training in contemporary Italian design , and especially Carlo Scarpa’s influence.

Recreating some of the exhibitive strategies of this period, the show highlights the contrast between suspension and fixidity of the 1950s, with some of the most playful and immersive solutions Aldo van Eyck and the Smithsons had created when the museum was inaugurated.

This exhibition, in which visitors will be able to experience various ways of looking at and living with art, also features archival photos and drawings which reveal ingenious solutions created for the Gulbenkian Museum.

Wednesday to Monday, from 10 am to 6 pm
