Beethoven’s 9th
Gulbenkian Orchestra and Choir
French composer Hector Berlioz considered Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 the “pinnacle of its author’s genius”. While considerations on the nature of this work have taken very different paths, its grandeur stands out from any judgment or label. In particular, its fourth movement took on a separate life and spread around the world in association with the highest values of humanism. Listening to the Ninth again, directed by maestro Lawrence Foster, conveys the idea that music can be a unifying factor and have deep-seated collective reverberations.
