Jorge Colaço and the Figurative Tiles of his Time

On the occasion of Jorge Rey Colaço’s 150th birthday (1868-1942), the Museu Nacional do Azulejo now hosts the exhibition Jorge Colaço and the Figurative Tiles of his Time which gathers works acquired by the museum in 2001, putting them in context along with qualified copies of figurative tiles of the time. Jorge Colaço, who found in tiles his main form of expression, always adopted a style and technique that met the taste of the society of his time. He worked as a caricaturist and oil painter, but it was as a painter of tiles that he stood out, being considered at the time by the public and other artists the most important figure of his generation in this art. Since the acquisition of part of his assets by the Museu Nacional do Azulejo, this space has become a center of the study of the artist’s work, contributing to the understanding of his creative process.
