Paula Rego and Adriana Varejão
Between Your Teeth

Between Your Teeth brings together two remarkable artists: Paula Rego (Lisboa, 1935 – London, 2022) and Adriana Varejão (b. Rio de Janeiro, 1964). Bringing together almost one hundred works, the exhibition aims to highlight the common lines between the two artists’ work, where violence is present in both the political and private spheres.
This exhibition reinterprets the power dynamics between two generations, with particular focus on the history of women in different geographies, opening up a vast thematic spectrum through which to reflect on the present.
The starting point is Paula Rego’s painting A Primeira Missa no Brasil [The First Mass in Brazil], a rarely exhibited work produced in 1993 and belonging to a private British collection.
