Quarteto Contratempus
18 Months

18 Months is an opera that tells the harrowing journey of refugees in search of safety after the devastation of their lands by war. The work addresses their struggles at sea, divine interventions that question suffering, and the search for acceptance in new lands. Through past traumas and the fight for a hopeful future, the opera highlights human resilience and the complex interplay between hope, empathy, and the harsh realities of life in exile. Inspired by real stories of Afghan, Syrian, and Ukrainian refugees in Portugal, the work offers a deep and sensitive portrait of this experience.
