Renée Gagnon

Until January 18, Casa da Liberdade – Mário Cesariny and Perve Galeria host an anthological exhibition by Renée Gagnon (b. 1942), a Canadian artist based in Lisbon, whose artworks, spanning photography, painting and screen printing, traverse decades and explore themes ranging from the transformation of industrial waste to the reinterpretation of landscapes and cultural heritage. The exhibition covers the artist’s most striking series, made from the 1970s to the present day, including her emblematic photographs and paintings inspired by the Musseques of Luanda, Angola.

At Perve Galeria, it will be showcased the series dedicated to the musseques of Luanda, Angola, the result of extensive research by the artist, which covered the periods before and after the country’s independence, including the years marked by the Civil War, offering visual and emotional testimony of a historical period of adversity and transformation.

At Casa da Liberdade – Mário Cesariny, other series developed by Gagnon throughout her career will be highlighted, including those in which she explores themes such as the dolmens and olive trees of the Alentejo, in the south of Portugal, or the traces of cultural ancestry in Europe.

Tuesday to Saturday, 2 pm to 8 pm
