Symphony No. 13 by Shostakovich
Portuguese Symphony Orchestra & São Carlos National Theatre Choir
Dimitri Shostakovich and Andreia Pinto-Correia used the orchestra to evoke historical places and events. Pinto-Correia, a Portuguese composer in the USA, created Xántara in 2011, inspired by Sintra. Shostakovich’s 13th Symphony, honours the victims of the Babi Yar massacre in Kyiv, inspired by Yevtushenko’s poem, addressing resistance, women’s work, Stalinist terror, and censorship. The debut faced threats, resulting in the change of controversial verses.
