Symphony No. 8 – “Symphony of a Thousand” by Mahler

Every year, after a season at the Vienna State Opera, Mahler and his family would go to a house on the lake at Wörthersee. In the summers, the composer maintained a strict compositional discipline. In the summer of 1906, the inspiration for the Symphony 8 was overwhelming, as he told Richard Specht: “It was a vision that struck me like a bolt of lightning.” The Symphony No.8, with two parts, begins with the hymn Veni Creator Spiritus and continues with Goethe’s poem Faust, uniting sacred and pagan. The premiere in September 1910, with more than 1000 musicians, definitively enshrined Mahler.
