In a passage from the book The Human Stain, Philip Roth’s greatest work of literature, the American writer can’t resist including a eulogy for the pianist Yefim Bronfman, with the protagonist commenting that Bronfman played with “such cadence and bravado” that he could rid him of any dark thoughts. Through fiction, Roth marvels at the pianist’s dexterity and visceral relationship with the piano. At Gulbenkian, Bronfman presents a programme in which his artistic intensity is put at the service of works by Mozart, Debussy, and Tchaikovsky.
